Gameplay is mostly the same as in the original. The result is a crazy mess involving alien technology and the 2012 apocalypse that became so convoluted that the developers eventually abandoned the whole thing and resolved it in a comic book. These segments aren’t great and at the time were supposed to be the climax of a five-year story. There are also the segments of the game that take place in modern day. The son of a British Templar father and Native American Assassin mother is something that oozes with intrigue, but the end result is a character that is there to serve two narratives (Colonial and modern era) to the point where he himself just looks like an accessory to the story. Templars” angle and Connor’s potential as a character also feels wasted. The story of Connor aiding the revolution is often bogged down by the usual “Assassins vs. The story isn’t as exciting as the premise would suggest. The bulk of the game takes place during the American Revolution and sees Connor rubbing elbows with Samuel Adams, George Washington and other important figures of the time. I don’t mind a slow burn in the beginning, but the slow pacing and constant tutorials suck all the wind out of the interesting premise that gets set up in the prologue. It takes hours for the game to really open and get off the ground and in that time, you play as the main character Connor’s father, Haytham, and then as a young Connor. Unfortunately, those improvements didn’t include trimming the fat from the grueling prologue. When the remaster was announced, Ubisoft said that they would be making mechanical improvements to the game, not just graphic ones.
The remaster only highlights how complicated and conflicting this game can be. “Assassin’s Creed 3” was first released in 2012 and brought with it a wave of disappointment that crashed against the rocks and turned into salt. Ubisoft has rolled the dice and remastered the black sheep of its flagship series.
